June Sommerfield Obituary

June Sommerfield

Cape Coral, Florida

Formerly of Saginaw

Sommerfield, June Bernice 7/21/1922-10/15/2021 died peacefully in Cape Coral, Florida at the age of 99. June was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Bertram L. and Sadie A. (Leedom) Dickason.  After graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School, June attended nursing school at Jenny Edmonson Memorial Hospital and became a Registered Nurse.  She moved to Orlando, Florida and met Donald L. Sommerfield at a USO dance. After a 3-month courtship, they wed on August 6, 1944, and were married for almost 64 years until Don’s death in 2009. They moved to Saginaw, Michigan after WWII and raised their family. June was president/chairperson of many groups including Church Women United, Junior Reading Club, Herig School PTA. For ten years, she directed the Saginaw County Miss America Scholarship Pageant. Don and June were members of the Tri-County Rock and Mineral Society spending many vacations hunting agates, Petosky stones, agatized coral, quartz crystals among others. They loved to travel. After retirement, they moved to Cape Coral, Florida where June developed her artistic abilities and became an accomplished painter. Her passion to volunteer saw her direct groups and become the first president of the Cape Coral Council for Arts and Humanities. She was vital in obtaining a state grant to build the Cape Coral Cultural Park Theater and she directed the talent showcase, Stars of Tomorrow Scholarship Program for many years. For all these efforts, June was awarded the Cape Coral Council for Arts and Humanities Citizen of the Year Medallion in 2016. She was a loving, funny, competitive, God loving, stubborn, and amazing person. The family’s memories are full of happy, funny Mom stories. When people would ask her the secret to a long life she would say, “Every day, I get up, look in the mirror, and say, ‘I’m going to do the best I can with what I’ve got.’” She will be missed.

June was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, Ralph B. Dickason and Isabelle Stowe, son Matthew T. Sommerfield, and granddaughter Britt P. Sommerfield. She is survived by her children Dean (Andrea) Sommerfield, Diane (Gary) Brown, Mark (Mary Lou) Sommerfield and grandchildren Eric (Rebecca) Hatch, Cara (Brad) Gardner, Adam Sommerfield, Alyson Sommerfield, great grandson Mason Gardner, and beloved dog Shadow.

The family wants to thank all the staff at Windsor of Cape Coral who were so good to her when the family could not be there.
