Our beloved wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister and friend passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2020, in the comfort of her home with her family by her side. She was 65 years old. Sylvia Ann Peña was born on June 7, 1955 in Owosso to Guadalupe R. and Sarah A. (Moreno) Peña. She married Benito “Ben” Cantú on August 22, 1992 in Saginaw, MI. He survives her. Sylvia graduated from Delta College with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. She applied her skills as an exceptional ICU and cardiac registered nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital. Sylvia then was a voice for her patients at Covenant HealthCare where she was a discharge planner/case manager and fierce advocate for those she cared for, retiring in March of 2020.
She was of the Catholic Faith and enjoyed attending worship at Holy Family Catholic Church. Above all, she loved and cherished her family and friends. She will forever be remembered for her selflessness to her family, making family meals, her generosity and ability to care for those around her. She enjoyed golfing in a league, playing in a pool league, gardening and photography.
Her kind heart will be deeply missed by her husband, Ben Cantú; children: Sabrina Cantú Burda, Marcus (Jennifer) Peña, Christina Ann Cantú; daughter-in-law Patricia Cantu; grandchildren: Vivian and Avery Peña, Jacob Fischer, Demitri Cantú-Johnson, Isabella, Bryce and Becca Burda and Penelope Cantú; mother, Sarah A. Peña; three sisters and two brothers: Raquel Rico, Joel (Pamela) Peña, Miriam (Vincent) Peña Cieluch, Michael (Margaret) Peña and Rosemary (Brian Trybulski) Peña; many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Guadalupe R. Peña; son, Benito “Ben” Cantú Jr.
FUNERAL: A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 11, 2020 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1525 S. Washington Ave., Saginaw, Rev. Fr. Prentice A. Tipton will officiate with Deacon Roger Pasionek, P.A. Rite of Committal at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, will take place Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Cederberg-Brietzke Funeral Home, 403 N. Michigan Ave, Saginaw on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sylvia’s family will share memories at the funeral home on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Sylvia will lie in state at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. In keeping with State mandated ordinances, face masks will be required, social distancing will be observed and limitations on attendance will be enforced.
